Don Cheadle will be LeBron James’ nemesis in the upcoming Space Jam sequel, the follow-up to Michael Jordan’s 1996 sports comedy.
The Oscar-nominated actor is reportedly in talks to play the villain alongside the join basketball superstar.
Cheadle’s Black Monday castmate Paul Scheer broke the casting news in an interview with CinemaBlend, explaining, “He’s the bad guy in Space Jam, and he said LeBron’s really great…”
The original film featured Danny DeVito as the bad guy, Mr. Swackhammer.
Meanwhile, James insists the Space Jam sequel is still on track for a summer 2021 release, despite the coronavirus pandemic.
“We’re kind of (OK),” he told the Road Trippin’ podcast. “A lot of it right now is animation, so being indoors is actually great for us. So we’re still on. Just like everything in the world, everything is slowed down a little bit, but we’re still on target. I’m looking forward to it.”
In the original Space Jam, sports icon Jordan teamed up with Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes cartoon characters to play a game of basketball with aliens.
